The short answer
The best planted-tank fish are small, colourful and plant-safe β they look stunning against greenery and wonβt uproot or eat it. Top picks include:
- Small shoaling tetras like ember, cardinal or rummynose tetras
- Harlequin and chili rasboras (perfect nano shoalers)
- Corydoras and otocinclus (peaceful, plant-friendly bottom crew)
- Cherry shrimp and nerite snails (cleanup that wonβt harm plants)
Pick plant-safe, colour-popping fish
Two things make a fish great for a planted tank: it wonβt damage the plants, and it looks good among them. Small shoaling fish tick both boxes β a tight school of red or blue tetras drifting through green stems is the classic aquascaping look. Avoid fish that dig, uproot or eat plants: goldfish, silver dollars, large cichlids and some big barbs are all poor matches. Corydoras and shrimp are bonuses because they forage without harming a thing.
Let the plants shape the stocking
A densely planted tank gives fish cover, so shy species feel bolder and show better colour. The plants also help absorb waste, but they donβt replace filtration or water changes. Introduce fish once the plants have settled and the tank is cycled, and stock gradually.
