The short answer
A small nano tank, yes β if the desk is solid, level and can genuinely take the weight. A full-sized aquarium, no. People underestimate how heavy water is: a tank weighs roughly a kilo per litre plus the glass, so even a modest desktop tank is far heavier than it looks. Match the tank to what the desk can safely hold.
Do the weight maths first
Water alone is about 1 kg per litre, and glass adds more on top. So:
- A 20 L nano tank β 25 kg full.
- A 40 L tank β 50 kg full.
- A 60 L tank β 70 kg-plus β too much for most desks.
A typical desk handles the smaller end fine, but concentrating 70 kg on four thin legs is asking for trouble. When in doubt, go smaller or use a stand.
Making a desk tank work
If you do put a nano tank on a desk:
- Keep it small and choose a sturdy, non-flexing desk.
- Sit it on the tankβs foam pad or a mat to spread the load and protect the wood.
- Keep it away from the edge, cables and anything a splash could ruin.
- Site it out of direct sun β see where to put an aquarium.
