The short answer
Neither is simply βbetterβ β they suit different setups. A glass lid cuts evaporation, stops fish jumping out and pairs with a separate modern LED, which is why most planted-tank keepers prefer it. A hood integrates a light and hides the top of the tank for a tidy all-in-one, but limits your lighting choice. For flexibility, a glass lid usually wins.
What each one does well
Glass lid β a clear pane (often with a plastic trim and hinge) sitting on the rim:
- Cuts evaporation dramatically, so you top up less and lose less heat.
- Stops jumpers β many fish leap, and a lid is the difference between finding them in the morning or on the floor.
- Lets you fit any separate light you like, including strong planted-tank LEDs.
- Keeps dust, and curious pets, out.
Hood β a full cover with lighting built in:
- Neat, enclosed look with the light integrated.
- Hides equipment and the waterline.
- But ties you to its built-in light, which is often weak for plants and hard to upgrade.
How to choose
- Planted or high-tech tank? A glass lid plus a dedicated LED gives you the light you need and easy access.
- Simple community tank, want it tidy and self-contained? A hoodβs built-in light may be plenty.
- Worried about jumpers or evaporation? Both help, but a well-fitted glass lid with minimal gaps is the tightest seal.
Leave a small cutout for cables and filter pipes either way, and clean condensation off the underside now and then so it doesnβt dim the light.
