The short answer
It depends on the type of shrimp. Neocaridina (cherry, blue dream, yellow) thrive at pH 6.8β7.8 in harder water. Caridina (crystal red, bee, taiwan bee) want soft, acidic water at pH 5.8β6.8. For both, GH β the mineral content β is arguably more important than pH, because shrimp need calcium and magnesium to moult properly. And above all, keep everything stable: shrimp are far more sensitive to sudden swings than to the exact numbers.
Neocaridina β the beginner-friendly ones
Cherry shrimp and their colour morphs are hardy and forgiving. They like neutral-to-slightly-alkaline water with a decent GH, which most moderately hard tap water provides. Because they tolerate a range, theyβre the shrimp to start with. To firm up soft water for them, see making water harder.
Caridina β the soft-water specialists
Crystal and bee shrimp need soft, acidic, low-mineral water, usually built from RO water remineralised with a caridina-specific salt and run over an active (buffering) soil substrate that holds pH low. Theyβre less forgiving and best for keepers ready to manage water carefully. See using RO water and the substrate hub.
Stability over targets
Whichever shrimp you keep, pick a target and hold it. Use a liquid test kit for GH, KH and pH, and see what TDS is for a fast daily check. More in the water testing hub.
