What pH do shrimp need?

The ideal pH and hardness for aquarium shrimp β€” neocaridina like harder neutral water, caridina prefer soft and acidic, and why stability matters most.

The short answer

It depends on the type of shrimp. Neocaridina (cherry, blue dream, yellow) thrive at pH 6.8–7.8 in harder water. Caridina (crystal red, bee, taiwan bee) want soft, acidic water at pH 5.8–6.8. For both, GH β€” the mineral content β€” is arguably more important than pH, because shrimp need calcium and magnesium to moult properly. And above all, keep everything stable: shrimp are far more sensitive to sudden swings than to the exact numbers.

Neocaridina β€” the beginner-friendly ones

Cherry shrimp and their colour morphs are hardy and forgiving. They like neutral-to-slightly-alkaline water with a decent GH, which most moderately hard tap water provides. Because they tolerate a range, they’re the shrimp to start with. To firm up soft water for them, see making water harder.

Caridina β€” the soft-water specialists

Crystal and bee shrimp need soft, acidic, low-mineral water, usually built from RO water remineralised with a caridina-specific salt and run over an active (buffering) soil substrate that holds pH low. They’re less forgiving and best for keepers ready to manage water carefully. See using RO water and the substrate hub.

Tip: watch GH and TDS as closely as pH. A sudden shift in dissolved minerals is what causes failed moults β€” keep it steady with consistent water changes.

Stability over targets

Whichever shrimp you keep, pick a target and hold it. Use a liquid test kit for GH, KH and pH, and see what TDS is for a fast daily check. More in the water testing hub.

Frequently asked questions

Do neocaridina and caridina shrimp need the same pH?

No. Neocaridina (cherry, blue dream) like harder, neutral-to-slightly-alkaline water, while caridina (crystal, bee, taiwan bee) prefer soft, acidic water. Mixing their requirements in one tank is why many keepers keep them separate.

Is pH or GH more important for shrimp?

GH is critical because shrimp need calcium and magnesium to moult successfully β€” a bad GH causes failed moults. But stable pH matters too, and both should be kept steady rather than tweaked around.
