The best betta tanks for 2026

A betta is a tropical fish, not a desk ornament — so it needs a heated, filtered tank of at least ~19 L (5 gallons) with gentle flow and a lid. Forget the tiny bowls. These are the tanks we'd give a betta a proper home in.

Frequently asked questions

What size tank does a betta fish need?

A minimum of about 19 L (5 gallons), and bigger is better and easier. Bettas are tropical fish that need a heater and a filter; a larger, heated, cycled tank stays far more stable than a bowl and lets a betta actually swim, explore and show its colours. Skip anything marketed as a 'betta bowl'.

Do betta fish need a filter and heater?

Yes to both. A heater keeps them in their tropical comfort zone (around 25–27°C), and a filter maintains water quality — just make sure the flow is gentle, as bettas dislike strong current with their large fins. A pre-filter sponge or a baffle on the outflow helps.

Can a betta live in a planted nano tank?

Beautifully — a planted nano is close to ideal. Live plants help water quality and give a betta places to rest and explore (they love broad leaves near the surface). Just keep the flow gentle and always fit a lid, as bettas are jumpers.

Can bettas live with other fish?

Sometimes, with care. A male betta can work in a larger community with peaceful, non-nippy tankmates and no other bettas or flashy long-finned fish — but many are happiest alone. Research any tankmates carefully, and always give a betta room to retreat.
