The best shrimp tanks for 2026

Dwarf shrimp need a stable nano with a gentle filter that won't suck up shrimplets — a sponge or corner filter is ideal. A little more water (30 L+) makes the colony far easier to keep stable than a tiny bowl. These are the nanos we'd start a shrimp colony in.

Frequently asked questions

What size tank is best for shrimp?

A 20–40 L nano is the sweet spot. It's big enough to stay chemically stable — which shrimp demand — while remaining a compact, plantable display. Colonies breed readily once parameters are steady, so start around 30 L and let them multiply.

What filter is safe for shrimp?

A sponge filter or a gentle corner/box filter is safest — the intake won't trap shrimplets. If your tank has a stronger filter, fit a pre-filter sponge over the intake. The Dennerle Nano Cube's corner filter is shrimp-safe out of the box.

Do shrimp need a heater?

Neocaridina (cherry shrimp) are hardy and often fine at room temperature; Caridina (crystal/bee shrimp) prefer cooler, stable, softer water. A small heater helps hold a steady temperature in a cold room. Avoid big swings above all.
