Where they fit — and the honest caveats

Tetra is squarely a beginner and value brand. It is affordable, available everywhere and reliable for what it is, which is exactly why it dominates the starter shelf.

The honest caveats are about ceiling rather than floor. As fish grow or you keep species with specific diets, most keepers graduate from generic flake to more targeted foods — a Hikari sinking pellet for bottom-dwellers, for instance. The all-in-one starter kits, too, tend to bundle a modestly sized filter and heater that many keepers later upgrade.
