Overview

The bumblebee goby (Brachygobius doriae) is a tiny, boldly striped black-and-gold fish that looks like a swimming bumblebee — and is far more demanding than its cute appearance suggests. At under 4 cm it is a true nano, but it is fussy about food, often needs slightly brackish water and is usually wild-caught, so it is best treated as a specialist project rather than a beginner community fish. Given a dedicated, slightly brackish tank and a diet of live and frozen foods, it is a charming, characterful little bottom-dweller.

Tank & water

A small colony suits a dedicated nano of at least 40 litres (10 gallons).

  • Temperature: hold 25–29 °C with a small heater.
  • Slightly brackish, hard, alkaline: aim for pH 7.0–8.5 with a little marine salt (SG ~1.002–1.005). Test with a kit and monitor salinity with a hydrometer.
  • Gentle filtration: a soft sponge filter protects these small, slow fish, plus regular water changes.
  • Aquascape: sand, plenty of small caves, rocks and pots — each goby likes to claim a little territory.
Best as a species tank: bumblebee gobies are fussy specialists. Keep them alone, in slightly brackish water, and add them only to a fully cycled tank so you can target-feed and control conditions.

Feeding

Bumblebee gobies are micro-carnivores and notoriously fussy — most refuse dry food outright. Offer small live and frozen foods: baby brine shrimp, daphnia, cyclops, micro bloodworm and similar. Because they are slow, deliberate feeders, they are easily beaten to food by faster fish, so a species tank where you can target-feed is by far the most reliable way to keep them well fed. Feed small amounts once or twice daily and watch that every fish is eating.

Tankmates

Best kept as a single-species group in a brackish nano, both for their feeding and because few common community fish share their conditions. If you attempt tankmates, choose only small, peaceful, brackish-tolerant species, and never anything that out-competes them at feeding time. Multiple gobies will squabble mildly over territory but coexist well with enough caves. For more small-tank ideas, see the best nano fish for a small tank.

For an easier fussy-eater alternative in freshwater, the scarlet badis has a similar live-food preference without the brackish requirement.

Bumblebee goby — frequently asked questions

Do bumblebee gobies need brackish water?

Most do best in slightly brackish water — a small amount of marine salt to a specific gravity around 1.002–1.005 — reflecting the estuarine habitats many are collected from. Some populations manage in hard, alkaline freshwater, but slightly brackish, hard, alkaline water tends to give longer, healthier lives. Because they are wild-caught and sold under mixed names, brackish is the safer default.

Why won't my bumblebee goby eat?

They are famously fussy and usually refuse dry flakes and pellets. Bumblebee gobies want small live and frozen foods — baby brine shrimp, daphnia, cyclops, micro bloodworm. Refusal to eat is nearly always because only dry food is offered, or because faster tankmates take everything first. A species tank with live and frozen foods solves most feeding problems.

Can bumblebee gobies live in a community tank?

It is difficult. They are tiny, slow, fussy feeders that are easily out-competed, and many communities are kept in soft freshwater they don't suit. They do far better in a dedicated, slightly brackish nano species tank where you can target-feed them and control the water. Treat them as a specialist project, not a community filler.
