Dwarf gourami
Trichogaster lalius
intermediate careOverview
The dwarf gourami (Trichogaster lalius) is a small, jewel-coloured labyrinth fish and a favourite community centrepiece. Peaceful and personable, it would be a beginner fish were it not for one serious catch: mass-farmed stock is frequently weakened by disease, including Dwarf Gourami Iridovirus. That makes sourcing healthy fish the make-or-break factor, and nudges this species into intermediate territory. Choose carefully and it is a gentle, rewarding fish.
Tank & water
A calm, well-planted tank suits them best — around 75 litres (20 gallons) for a male or a small group.
- Temperature: hold 24–28 °C with a steady heater.
- Filtration & flow: a gentle filter is essential; as a labyrinth fish it needs a calm surface and a small air gap to breathe, so baffle strong outflow.
- Water: pH 6.0–7.5, soft to moderately hard, kept clean and stable.
- Planting: dense plants and floating cover give this shy fish confidence.
Feeding
Dwarf gouramis are omnivores with small mouths. Feed a quality flake, micro-pellet or gourami food once or twice a day, with frozen or freeze-dried daphnia, bloodworm and brine shrimp for variety and colour. They also pick at small live foods and a little vegetable matter. Feed modest amounts — see best fish food.
Tankmates
Peaceful but timid, dwarf gouramis do best with calm, non-nippy community fish: small rasboras, tetras, corydoras and peaceful bottom-dwellers. Avoid fin-nippers and boisterous fish that outcompete them for food or intimidate them.
Common care notes
- Buy healthy, well-coloured stock — the top priority
- Keep flow gentle and leave a surface air gap
- One male only, or a male with females
- Quarantine and provide dense planting
Start with a healthy fish and a calm planted tank, and the dwarf gourami rewards you with vivid colour and a gentle presence.
Dwarf gourami — frequently asked questions
Why do dwarf gouramis die so easily?
Many farmed dwarf gouramis carry Dwarf Gourami Iridovirus and bacterial infections, so weak, poorly bred stock is common. There is no reliable cure once symptoms show, which is why buying alert, healthy, well-coloured fish from a good source is the single most important step.
Do dwarf gouramis need access to the surface?
Yes. Like all gouramis they are labyrinth fish that breathe air from the surface, so the tank must never be fully sealed or have a strong surface current. Leave a small air gap under the lid and keep flow gentle.
Can I keep two male dwarf gouramis together?
It is risky. Males are territorial and often fight in typical tanks. Keep a single male as a centrepiece, or a male with one or two females in a well-planted tank with sightline breaks.
