Overview

The peaceful betta (Betta imbellis) is the calmer wild cousin of the Siamese fighting fish — a 5 cm labyrinth fish with subtle iridescent greens, blues and red-edged fins. As the common name suggests, it is far less pugnacious than the domesticated betta, which occasionally allows males to share a large planted tank and makes it a better bet for a peaceful community. It keeps all the character of a betta with less of the temper.

Tank & water

A single fish is comfortable in 19 litres (5 gallons); a pair or group needs 40 litres or more with dense planting.

  • Temperature: 24–28 °C from a small heater — like all bettas, they are tropical.
  • Water: pH 6.0–7.5, soft to moderate; they favour softer, slightly acidic water. Test with a kit.
  • Planted with surface cover: floating plants and broad leaves give resting spots and territory breaks.
  • A lid and gentle flow: bettas are jumpers — cover the tank and baffle a filter; keep it cycled.
Calmer, not tame: imbellis males still flare and defend territory. Multiple males only work in a large, heavily planted tank with sightline breaks — watch your individuals closely.

Feeding

Peaceful bettas are carnivores with small stomachs. Feed a quality betta pellet or micro food once or twice a day, only what they clear in a couple of minutes, plus frozen or live bloodworm and daphnia as treats. As with any betta, overfeeding and the resulting waste are common problems — feed sparingly. See how often to feed.

Tankmates

Their calmer nature suits a peaceful, planted nano community. Good matches are small rasboras, pygmy corydoras, snails and shrimp (though shrimp may occasionally be eaten). Avoid fin-nippers, other bettas in small tanks, and anything boisterous. Judge your individual fish, as temperament still varies. For more on mixing bettas, see can a betta live with other fish.

Peaceful betta (Imbellis) — frequently asked questions

Is Betta imbellis less aggressive than a normal betta?

Yes — the name "peaceful betta" is earned. Betta imbellis is a wild species far calmer than the domesticated Betta splendens, and males can sometimes be kept together in a large, heavily planted tank. They still flare and squabble, so watch individuals and provide plenty of cover.

Can Betta imbellis be kept in a community tank?

Often, yes. Their calmer temperament makes them better community bettas than a typical fighter, provided tankmates are small, peaceful and non-nippy. Give them a well-planted tank with surface cover and gentle flow, and they mix with many nano species.

Does Betta imbellis need the same care as a Siamese fighter?

Broadly yes — warm, stable, gently filtered water, a lid, and a carnivore diet. They lean towards softer, slightly acidic water reflecting their wild origins, and their shorter fins cope a little better with flow than the long-finned show bettas.
