Skunk corydoras
Corydoras arcuatus
intermediate careOverview
The skunk corydoras (Corydoras arcuatus) is a slim, elegant catfish named for the single bold black stripe that arcs from its snout over the back to the tail. It comes from soft, warm Amazon waters, which shapes its care: it prefers gentle, slightly acidic conditions and a mature tank, making it a touch more demanding than bulletproof corys like the peppered or bronze. In the right water it is a peaceful, active shoaler that rewards a little extra attention.
Tank & water
A group of six needs at least 60 litres (15 gallons) of floor space. Hold a warm 24–28 °C with a heater and a gentle filter on soft, slightly acidic, well-cycled water.
- Smooth substrate: sand or rounded gravel protects their barbels — see best aquarium sand and gravel and the substrate hub.
- Blackwater touches: driftwood and leaf litter add gentle tannins they appreciate.
- Mature, stable water: low nitrate and no sudden swings.
Feeding
As omnivores, skunk corys forage the bottom for small foods. Feed sinking pellets, wafers and granules — a sinking food that reaches the substrate is essential — with frozen bloodworm and daphnia as treats. See our best fish food picks and feed a dedicated evening ration so they aren’t left cleaning up after faster fish.
Tankmates
Peaceful and soft-water-loving, skunk corys suit calm communities of small tetras, rasboras, pencilfish alternatives and cherry shrimp. They shoal best with their own kind but mix with other corys such as the panda or sterbai. Avoid hard-water fish and boisterous tankmates.
Frequently asked questions
The skunk corydoras is a striking, peaceful catfish that asks for soft, warm, mature water in return for its arc-striped good looks. Meet those conditions with a group of six on smooth sand and it will thrive.
Skunk corydoras — frequently asked questions
Why is it called a skunk corydoras?
For the single bold black stripe that arcs from the nose, over the back, and down to the tail — a marking that recalls a skunk's stripe. It is one of the more elegant corydoras, and the arc pattern makes it easy to identify.
Are skunk corydoras harder to keep than other corys?
A little. They prefer soft, slightly acidic, warm water and a genuinely mature tank, so they are best for keepers with some experience rather than a brand-new setup. Get the water and substrate right and they are as peaceful and rewarding as any cory.
Do skunk corydoras need soft water?
They do best in soft to moderately soft, slightly acidic water. They will tolerate a range, but very hard, alkaline water suits them less well than blackwater-leaning conditions with driftwood and gentle tannins.
