Overview

Utricularia graminifolia — “UG” — is a prized but temperamental carpeting bladderwort that forms a fine, grassy, moss-like lawn quite unlike any rooted carpet. It is also carnivorous, catching microscopic prey in tiny bladder traps, a hint that it comes from lean, soft-water habitats. UG has a reputation for melting away just when it looks established, so it is very much an advanced, high-tech plant that rewards a stable, CO2-injected tank and punishes an unstable one.

Planting & placement

UG is grown as a carpet in the foreground. Break the mat into small portions and press them into a soft nutrient substrate; many aquascapers strongly favour the dry-start method, growing UG emersed on damp soil under a lid for several weeks so it roots in and converts before flooding. This dramatically cuts the risk of melt. See our how to grow a carpet in a planted tank and best aqua soil guides. It contrasts well with finer-leaved neighbours in a detailed aquascape.

Light, CO2 & ferts

UG is a high-tech carpet. Give it strong light and stable, pressurised CO2 — both are effectively required for it to establish and stay dense. It prefers soft, lean water and a nutrient substrate; go easy on heavy water-column dosing, but a balanced liquid fertilizer supports it. Our best light for a planted tank guide helps you hit the intensity it needs.

The dry start is your best defence against melt. UG most often collapses during the switch from emersed to submerged growth. Growing it in emersed and flooding only once it has knitted in — with CO2 and high light ready — is what gets it through.

Propagation & problems

Once established, UG propagates by simple division — lift and split a patch of the interwoven mat and replant it to expand the carpet. The defining problem is meltdown: sudden browning and mush during the transition to submerged growth, worsened by hard water, unstable CO2 or low light. The fixes are a dry start, rock-solid CO2, soft clean water and patience. UG is not a beginner carpet, but few plants match its fine, grassy texture when it finally settles in.

Utricularia graminifolia — frequently asked questions

Is Utricularia graminifolia really carnivorous?

Yes. UG is a bladderwort — its stolons carry tiny bladder traps that catch microscopic organisms. This has no bearing on tank fish or shrimp; it simply reflects that the plant comes from nutrient-poor habitats and prefers soft, lean water.

Can UG carpet without CO2?

Not reliably. UG is a demanding carpet that needs high light and CO2 to establish and stay dense. Without CO2 it is very prone to melting away after planting. It is not a low-tech plant.

Why did my UG melt and turn to mush?

UG often melts during the transition from its emersed grown-in form to submerged growth, especially in hard water or without CO2. A dry start, stable CO2, high light and soft, clean water give it the best chance to convert and re-establish.
