One pump, two tanks, tuned separately
The Fluval A402 is what you reach for when a single-outlet pump has run out of road. It carries two outlets, each with its own flow-control dial, so a single unit can feed two tanks — or two air stones in one big tank — at different bubble rates. With 330–370 L/h on tap and a 600-litre rating, it has the headroom to push air down a deep tank where cheaper pumps stall against the back-pressure.
Powerful without being obnoxious
A strong pump can easily become the loudest thing in the room, so Fluval built the A402 around a noise-dampening baffle chamber and oversized rubber feet, and fitted EPDM rubber diaphragms that resist the hardening that makes old pumps rattle. It is still a bigger, more present machine than a nano pump — this is not the thing to hide behind a bedside 20-litre — but for its output it stays impressively composed. As always, sit it on a soft mat and fit a check valve on each line.

Can the Fluval A402 run two separate tanks?
Yes — that is its main appeal. Each of the two outlets has its own flow dial, so you can send more air to a deep tank on one side and throttle a nano on the other. Fit a check valve on each airline so a power cut cannot siphon water back into the pump, and you have a tidy two-tank aeration setup from one unit.
Is a pump this powerful too much for one tank?
On a small tank, yes — you would be running it near its lowest setting and still hear it. The A402 earns its keep on tanks from roughly 200 L upward, deep tanks with high back-pressure, or anywhere you want to drive two sponge filters hard. For a single 75–150 L tank, a quieter single-outlet pump is the smarter buy.
Will it drive sponge filters?
