Two things make it more than plain gravel. First, it is lightly active — the porous volcanic grain releases minerals and trace elements to feed root systems rather than sitting completely inert. Second, it comes infused with dormant beneficial bacteria that wake up on contact with water, start breaking down ammonia, and give a new tank a real head start on the nitrogen cycle.
The fine grain is a double-edged trait. It lets even delicate roots spread through the substrate easily, but it also clouds the water if you disturb it, so you pour it gently and fill the tank slowly.
