Overview

The red neon blue-eye (Pseudomugil luminatus) is a tiny, fiery rainbowfish from the freshwaters of southern New Guinea — under 3 cm, but males blaze an intense neon red-orange set off by glowing blue eyes. In a shoal the males flare their fins and spar endlessly, and the colour is simply electric against a planted background. Peaceful, lively and dazzling, it is one of the most desirable nano fish going, provided you accept its naturally brief life.

Tank & water

A shoal thrives in a mature, planted 38-litre (10-gallon) tank or larger with open swimming space.

  • Temperature: 24–28 °C from a small heater — it is a warm tropical fish.
  • Water: soft to neutral, pH 6.0–7.5, clean and stable. Test with a kit.
  • Densely planted with open water: fine plants and floating cover frame the open lanes where males show off.
  • Gentle flow: a soft sponge filter keeps the water clean without a strong current.
Colour comes from the shoal: males blaze brightest when competing. Keep a good group with several males in a planted, well-lit tank for the deepest red.

Feeding

Red neon blue-eyes are surface-and-midwater micropredators with small mouths. Offer fine crushed micro-pellets and powdered foods, supplemented generously with small live and frozen fare — baby brine shrimp, daphnia, cyclops and microworm. Feed small amounts several times a day, using floating and slow-sinking foods since they feed near the top. See how often should I feed my fish.

Behaviour & tankmates

Peaceful and active, they suit a calm nano community. Good tankmates are small, gentle fish and dwarf shrimp — small rasboras, chili rasboras and cherry shrimp. Avoid boisterous or fin-nipping species that intimidate them. Keep a full shoal with several males so the displays and fiery colour are always on show, and they will spawn in a planted tank.

Acclimatise new fish gently and give them a quiet week or two to settle, as freshly imported blue-eyes can look washed-out until they feel secure and the shoal establishes its pecking order. Dense fine-leaved plants and moss also give any eggs and fry cover, which is the natural way to sustain a group over these fishes’ short lives.

Give the red neon blue-eye a mature, planted, warm tank and a competitive shoal, and few nano fish deliver a more intense splash of colour for the space — see our best nano aquarium picks and best fish for a planted tank.

Red neon blue-eye — frequently asked questions

How is the red neon blue-eye different from other blue-eyes?

Pseudomugil luminatus is prized for its intense fiery red-orange body, which glows against green plants, paired with the electric-blue eyes shared by its relatives. Males in a competitive shoal are among the most vividly coloured of all nano fish, especially in a well-planted, well-lit tank.

Why is the red neon blue-eye short-lived?

Like all Pseudomugil, it is a naturally short-lived rainbowfish, typically living one to two years even in ideal conditions. It matures fast and breeds readily, so the usual approach is to keep a shoal breeding in a planted tank rather than expecting long individual lifespans.

Do red neon blue-eyes need a heater?

Yes. They are warm-water tropical fish that do best around 24–28 °C, held steady with a small heater. Stable warmth, soft-to-neutral water and a mature planted tank bring out their strongest red colour and keep the shoal active and displaying.
